Seek Out 4 Mins of Fame by Producing a Mini-Movie

Remember those days you used to record fake radio shows and commercials with your friends and siblings? Well, the technology has changed, but it’s no reason not to take it on and create a little drama in your friends lives. Making a short four minutes movie can be done in as little as few days of time altogether… and it’s a great way to have fun on a rainy or cold winter day!

Creating a movie was simple and complicated at the same time. At least, here’s the story of our adventure in producing a short film.

We were six people in all. We had 4 actors, 1 cameraman and 1 producer (two of which were also script writers, and one who was technical producer and film editor). We also had some volunteers to hold up some very bright lights to help light up the scene.

All in all, we took 1 day and 1 hour to produce a four minute video with a murder and a romantic twist. This does not include the couple days prior to the shooting (video that is) to write, review and revise the script.

As far as technical equipment goes, you’ll need a video-camera (preferably digital to simplify editing), really powerful lights, a microphone (if you choose to add sounds), video-editing software, props and willing actors.

Things we underestimated include… the time it took to shoot a four minute video (hours, hours!!), how much we would have to review the scripts to ensure all the story’s strings were tied, the importance of consistent setting/props positioning (you’ll notice that in our video), the importance of really bright lights when shooting indoors, and the importance of natural light changing outdoors as shooting continues into the afternoon.

Things that we were really lucky we had… good props, very patient and hardworking actors (thanks guys!), a fantastic video editor and music/sound composer (hurray Jeff!), ketchup, cool slow motion shots, extra hands on deck to help with holding of lights and a flexible homeowner who let us put ketchup all over their floor space.

As for the result of all that hard work, here our creation:

“SPOON! FORK!”
