This halloween try your hand at pumpkin carving… underwater !

My Underwater Carved Pumpkin !
This Halloween, I undertook an odd adventure !… I went scuba diving in Lake Ontario (Canada) on October 29th with my family and friends from our local diving club… and we carved out some pumpkins underwater for Halloween !!

At times, it felt like a horror movie not just for the surreal context of being underwater in dark costumes but also because your actions and moving the knife around are all in really slow motion — it’s hilarious.

The best part was that when you carve pumpkins underwater… there’s no mess! All the seeds and guts just float around you and become fish food (though of course we didn’t get attacked by fish for food since we were in a freshwater lake and, well, you don’t go scuba diving in fresh water lakes for the fish!). I’ve got to say it was the cleanest pumpkin carving I had ever done!

Instructions on Carving a Pumpkin Underwater:

  1. Carve off the lid and put it aside on the ground (if you try to bring it with you, you will end losing it as it will bob up to the surface pretty fast)
  2. Put a big rock in the pumpkin so it sinks with you.
  3. Put on your scuba diving gear, add 1-2 pounds to your weight (the pumpkin is positively buoyant), bring a good pumpkin carving knife and jump in with your pumpkin! You should to be really careful with the knife if you don’t have a cover for it (I stuck it into the pumpkin as I swam to the best spot).
  4. Once at a depth of at least 15-20 feet, remove the rock and take out all the guts (this is the best part!)
  5. Then…work with your dive buddy to hold the pumpkin down (against a rock or the ground) and carve it. And you’re done!
